Dear 2021
Tomorrow was real. As real as today. It was laid out in stone certainty, playing out before it had begun. Everyone, everywhere, knew it.
It was there waiting on neighbourhood streets and in beating city centres. Tomorrow and the next day, week, month, year was already planned, predicted, known. Tomorrow was real. It was right there waiting in calendars: 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and on, and on. All those plans waited in neat little rows. There were promises things yet to be done and events that would transpire. Everything would unfold in good time, like clockwork. Tick, tock.
Then one day, tomorrow never came. At least, not the one we planned. Everyone, everywhere felt uncertain days ahead.
The connected world stayed home and peered outside through little black screens, modern windows to humanity, and wondered about their uncertain tomorrows.
Societies’ vulnerable became more exposed, their tomorrows even more uncertain.
No matter the place, everyone, everywhere felt exposed, controlled and interconnected — and all because of tiny invisible forces: germs, COVID-19, control, fear, defiance, dreams and vulnerability.
Time shortened. We entered unpredictable days. And everyone, everywhere, finally knew what it was to live in the moment, today.
And the world became...
